What gives me hope?
One of my first weeks that I worked at the Kids Garden in Winnipeg we were looking for beans and peas that the kids planted earlier in the season. One kid came running up to me with the biggest smile, to show the bean that he had found. I told him he could eat it and he bit down on the bean with a look of fascination and that it was the most amazing thing ever.
Experiencing nature with kids give me hope. Kids often don't know the extent of environmental damage on the earth and they continue to care and have energy for the natural environment around them.
What gives me hope?
ReplyDeleteI was leading a high school class from Goshen on a tour of the co-op. I had been discussing the concept of a cooperative and why it might make sense as a business model, to these 9th and 10th graders. For a minute, I looked around and thought "what am I talking about? They don't care! They're probably wondering when this lady is going to stop talking!". That was until one of the kids raised his hand and asked me to discuss the support network for local farmers that we have built into the co-op as a way of sustainability. A 9th grader! I couldn't believe it. Someone had been listening...
I learned from that experience to NEVER underestimate the understanding of a child and that THERE IS HOPE!
I agree with Leah. There are these moments when you think no one is listening, and then BLAM! the most unlikely kid says something amazing. It's like seeing a Golden Eagle at Merry Lea...something you won't forget!
